The Soul Sickness of Addiction
My belief is that people who are trapped by addiction are soul sick. They are spiritually broken and disconnected from the greater good.
Addiction is designed to separate people from their worlds and suck them into an all consuming self-centered vacuum. The isolation and terror that an addict feels is often not enough for them to want to reach out and ask for help. It is baffling how an addict will so fiercely protect and defend a disease that wants only destroy all that they love and value, may ultimately cause irreparable physical and mental damage, cause their pre-mature death, or take their very liberty. Until an addict can address the underlying causes that created the “disconnect,” they have virtually no chance of a sustained and joyous life in recovery.
